A space heater can be a wonderful thing on a cold day, but, each year, over 25,000 house fires are caused by them. This is why it’s crucial that you use your space heater properly. Please be sure to follow these space heater safety tips to keep your home safe this winter:
Use Proper Placement
Space heaters should always be kept on a hard, level surface, at least 3 feet away from flammable objects. (Keep them away from furniture, bedsheets, and curtains!)
Space heaters should not be used in children’s rooms, as there is a high likelihood that they may accidentally touch them and burn themselves. The same consideration should be taken with pets as well.
Using Your Space Heater
When using a space heater, you should always be in the room with the heater. It should not be left unattended. Turn the heater off before going to bed, even if the heater is in the bedroom with you.
You should be sure that your smoke detectors are working so that you can be quickly alerted if something does go wrong.
Space heater safety is important, but even when you do everything right, there’s still a chance for an accident or an unexpected setback. Having the right insurance can make these times a bit easier to deal with. If you are looking for home, auto, business or other types of insurance, talk to one of our agents.
